The Temperance (Temperance? - ref certain album covers) Seven were founded at Christmas 1955 by students at the Chelsea School of Art, though the band mythologized its foundation as dating from 1904 at the fictitious Pasadena Cocoa Rooms, Balls Pond Road, North London. The three founder members were Paul McDowell (who originally played trombone), Philip Harrison (who originally played banjo) and Brian Innes (drums). Gradually the band evolved into a nine-piece ensemble with a light-hearted and humorous performing style.

ReplyDeleteSad to say, "Whispering" Paul McDowell died recently (early 2016). He lived in Northamptonshire for many years, and for a long time taught tai chi.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the re-upload. This was a great group without whom later groups like the Bonzo Dog Band would have been possible. Indeed, they made their first 45s for Parlophone. On a related note, there's a YouTube video of Petula Clark performing "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" on BBC with the Temperance Seven. Someone ought to make a mix of all the great songs of British rock groups that paid homage to the vaudeville and dancehall traditions of their parents.

I heard their recording of Rodgers' and Hart's "You Are Too Beautiful" on the Shellac Shack's latest show and its was superb. Elegance incarnate!
